The Church Hill Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted to ban fund-raising roadblocks in the city – after a minor accident scared the dickens out of a Volunteer High student, a driver…. and probably the city attorney.
Last month, neighboring Mount Carmel limited the number of fund-raising roadblocks to six per year — one per month April to September and they added a few new regulations – one of them being don’t do hurkies and backflips in the road. Personally, I’ve never approved of kids begging on the street. Not only is it a bad idea to put teenage girls in the middle of the street with buckets of cash, which just screams “Abduct Me” – it makes you feel like a complete jerk when you drive past with the window up… even if you just gave on the other end of town.
What happened to those days when school clubs and church youth groups actually washed, baked, mowed, raked, raffled, sold or otherwise worked to earn money?
